The Sky is Gray (quotes i liked)

Quotes from The Sky is Gray:
"I can tell Mama don't know where she's going" (Gaines 103)
"I'm sure the can's empty. I'm sure she could have carried it herself -- maybe both of them ant the same time" (114)

Hey everybody! I really like these two quotes because in my opinion, the first one shows how the setting of the story and where they were walking to reflects how the mother feels about her position in life and society as a black woman living in racist America. They were mistreated because of their race and left the dentist office. The mother was walking with her son in no particular direction and they basically got lost. I think this means that she felt lost in a world where she didn't belong.

The reason why I liked this second quote so much is because it showed me that not every white person living in this time period was completely bad. The old woman who told the boy to take out the garbage had offered him and his mother food, but his mother said that they don't take hand outs and the lady, being kind hearted, lied and said that her garbage needed to be put out in the front. According to this quote, she was lying and was just trying to get them to eat after sensing their hunger. To me, that was admirable of her considering the day and age they were living in and what places in society they all had.
