Topic:"Freedom"
Peace of Writing : The Sky is Gray
The Sky is gray captured my attention a bit more than Uncle Tom's Children because I was struck by a part that depicted a mom taking away a boy's freedom and making him a young-man (literally).
"One in my trap, one in Ty's trap...we was going to play with them and let them go, but she made me kill them 'cause we needed the food"(Sky Gray 89).
I liked this quote because it made me see how fortunate I am to have had a childhood (and still have). It was really cruel of the mother to make him kill two innocent creatures against his will. On top of that she was hitting him with a stick. This is a very "un cool" way to make a kid into a man, but I guess moms are always right and this may have been necessary for his initiation to assume the position of a "man."

Personally, this part of the story made me sad because the bird died, but also because Ty and James are being forced into a adulthood and they can never be children. This can lead to some serious repercussions in the future and can put on a block to make them serious all of the time.
I think that beating Richard was the only way the mom knew how to teach. She had to teach Richard how to fend for himself if she were to leave the family just like how their dad left the family. I'm not saying she couldn't have used a softer touch. I'm saying I understand.
I agree with u about this being and un cool way to transform him from a boy to a man but i also think that this might have been necessary at this time period. With everything that was goin on in the outside world and with the amount of people who would try to mentally and physically break him, in some ways, i think some of these things mgiht have beenn necessary in her opinion even though i dnt exactly agree with it.
