"I cant ever be scared and i cant ever cry."
This quote stood out to me because it showing how the character is being deprived out of his childhood because he has to grow up fast and be ready for the world and society inwhich he lives in. In the story The Sky is Gray the character wants love and affection from his mom but all she does is beat him and try to make him tough and prepared for what kind of cards that hes about to be dealt. This quote has alot of meaning to it because when it is actually looked at and thought about it coveys a different since of what the boy had to go through and it had a affect on his life.Also the qoute talks about not being scared but i feel that one has to be scared in order to live in reality and one must cry to show emotion and to experience pain and to let go of it.
Murder during Freedom Summer
These three men, (from right), Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner were abducted and murdered in Mississippi in the summer of 1964 because of their involvment in activism related to Freedom Summer. National attention was directed to this spectacle, as an alarming indicator that the sacrifices of the movement weren't exclusively black. White segregationists in Mississippi sought to make an example of Goodman and Schwerner to frighten other whites involved in the struggle. It didn't work.

I understand your perspective that you must accept defeat in order to learn. However, I disagree with that statement. In order to be shown as a strong willed individual, you must not show any weak emotions. This causes people to think that you are vulnearble. This usually leads to people taking advantage of you. My initial thought on the quote was, the boy is aware that his misery would last for a long time.
